Detailed Description

The DooMaw is a rugged Alaskan-style STOL bush-plane designed with off-field operations as a primary consideration. It has long-travel suspension, large wheels, high ground-clearance, 5 stage barn-door flaps, Handley Page slots, huge propeller, 100hp Rotax, luggage bin and is built with crash-worthiness as a priority.

This design has a sophisticated folding-wing mechanism where the wings fold, in seconds, flat against the side of the fuselage, so it takes up very little room in a trailer or hangar. Can be built with, or without the folding wings.

The build to date is extensively documented online, on the DooMaw – building a STOL thread, on Aircrafts Pilots Forum. Anyone who may be interested in this aircraft should read the entire 12 pages of the thread please, it will explain most things about the design and build, and the detailed images show the quality of every aspect of the build. To view the thread you will have to register on the site, it is free and only takes a few minutes – and there is a wealth of information of all aspects of aviation on that site.

The build time to date has been about 1900 leisurely hours, there are about 2-300hrs required to complete it.

For sale are –

  • Fully TIG welded 4130 chromoly airframe incl. fuselage, fin, rudder, folding horizontal stabiliser with bracing cables and folding lock mechanism, elevators with trim tab etc

  • Bolly gold-anodised hub and 3 CF blades adjustable pitch 72”dia propeller, and spinner
  • Tall, long-travel landing gear legs and tailwheel
  • All controls are installed, including 5 stage flap lever, adjustable rudder pedals, throttle, fuel tank, s/s firewall
  • Forward fuselage aly panels, primed and drilled ready for riveting
  • Stits Polyfiber fabric for fuselage and wing covering, including inspection ports, strips/tapes etc
  • Impact-absorbing seat system with seat cushions and upholstery with headrests
  • 4 point ex-military harnesses
  • Instrument panel with analog instruments and mini tablet mount, fuel sight gauge

  • All machined parts for sophisticated ‘fold flat against the side’ wing folding mechanism (or install the wings non-folding if hangar space/trailering is not an issue)
  • 4130 tube material for wing torque tube controls, with bushings, fittings etc
  • Main spar 6061T6 material with packets of solid rivets
  • Streamline 6061T6 wing strut extrusions
  • Machined articulated strut ends for wing-folding
  • Various hardware, piano hinges, AN bolts, CRMO tubing, bushings, bearings etc
  • All sizes of new AN bolts to complete the project with a large surplus
  • Full documentation from the outset of the project including registering the build with RAAus prior to commencement
  • All housed in a large aly-skinned box trailer with new tyres and registered, ready to tow away·

Before the project was paused, all chromoly framing was protected with a thin coating of sprayed epoxy but will need disassembly and a light sandblasting to remove minor surface rusting marks and suggest powdercoating.

Purchaser will need to be someone with the appropriate fabrication skills and some knowledge of aircraft design. This is not a kit but a custom design, however it does follow the general steel-framed ‘Alaskan Bushplane’ concept, so is no more complex than the Piper Cub but with performance more in keeping with the Just Aircraft SuperSTOL.

Priced at well under half the total cost of the listed components - and with 1900 hours of skilled labour thrown in free!
